Do what you can to get the most out of your retinol

Retinol, we’ve all heard of it. It's an ingredient that’s been thrown around in the skincare world for a while now. Whilst it's an absolute powerhouse ingredient and can do wonders for your skin, you should try to get the most out of it.

Firstly let’s talk about what retinol is. Retinol is a type of retinoid created from a form of vitamin A. Sometimes even referred to as vitamin A1. The smaller molecules in retinol go deep into the epidermis (your outer layer of skin) right through to your dermis (the layer under the epidermis).

Almost everyone can use retinol in some form. If you have sensitive skin, patch test and start using 1-2 times per week. For everyone else, retinol only needs to be applied 2 to 3 times per week; remember we said it was a powerhouse ingredient? It is best used at night. Retinol is naturally photo-unstable; it will break down when exposed to sunlight, making the ingredient less effective. Let it do its best work whilst you sleep.

Retinol does everything you want it to. No, really, we had to make a list to show you all the things it  does for your skin,

  • Reduces breakouts and helps to fight acne
  • Increases cell turnover and decreases excess oil
  • Boosts blood flow to the skin, which increases the production of collagen
  • Retextures the skin
  • It can even fade away stubborn pigmentation. Who knew!

To get the most out of your retinol, you first need to prep your skin. Give your skin the best chance at fully absorbing the products you’re about to let it soak up. Here’s what we suggest.

Start by using our Clarifier High Definition Exfoliator (Clarifier Black). This formula contains grapefruit extract, rich in antioxidants grapefruit extracts helps to soothe the skin whilst clearing out congested pores. If you have sensitive skin, this product is a perfect match for you.

Next, use Clarifier Enzy High Definition Advanced PoreTech Formula (Clarifier Enzy). Clarifier Enzy uses lipophilic properties to help dissolve both blackheads and whiteheads. It breaks down melanin that is deposited into the skin's top layers and is deposited, breaking down hyperpigmentation. By prepping your skin, the retinol has the chance to be fully absorbed and work its magic.

This product works with your next step by improving the appearance of sun-damaged skin and even correcting uneven skin tone. Finally, use our Dermatology Science Formula Evolve Hydro Retinol (Evolve).

This formula uses a clinical-grade form of active and stable hydro retinol and won’t leave your skin feeling greasy. Containing smaller molecules, this formulation has a light, pleasant texture, leaving your skin feeling smooth whilst reducing signs of hyperpigmentation.

Sometimes less is more, so use this method 2-3 times per week. You’ll get the results you want by using it 2-3 times per week.
